Best dictation apps for iPhone in 2026
Diction Labs makes Diction, so read this with that in mind. Every app below is good at something, and each entry says who it suits. Facts are from the App Store and each company's site, checked October 2026.
The short answer
- Best for self-hosters and privacy: Diction. Sends your voice to a speech server you run, from any app, for free, or keeps it on the phone. App Store label: Data Not Collected.
- Best free option with no limits: Diction on-device, or Apple Dictation if raw text is enough.
- Best for swipe typing and many typing languages: Gboard or SwiftKey, if dictation is not your main thing.
- Best if you live on a Mac: Superwhisper or Wispr Flow, both started on desktop.
- Best for teams that want a managed plan: Wispr Flow.
1. Diction
A full iPhone keyboard built for voice. Dictate into any app, or type with on-device autocorrect and next-word suggestions. Speech runs on the iPhone (free, offline), on your server (free, open source, any Whisper or OpenAI-compatible endpoint), or on Diction Cloud ($5.99/month, Live transcription). Writing Tools remove filler words, fix grammar, format lists and edit text by voice. 99 dictation languages. No swipe typing yet.
2. Gboard
Google's keyboard, with Glide Typing and 58 typing languages. A strong typing keyboard, but the iPhone version has not been updated since May 2022, and voice goes to Google. Diction vs Gboard
3. SwiftKey
Microsoft's keyboard, still maintained on iPhone, with swipe typing. Dictation is English only and goes to Microsoft. Diction vs SwiftKey
4. Wispr Flow
Polished cloud dictation with strong AI editing, on Mac, Windows and iPhone. Free tier has a weekly word limit; Pro is $15/month. Cloud only on iPhone. Diction vs Wispr Flow
5. Apple Dictation
Built in and free, on-device for many languages. Writes exactly what you said and stops after 30 seconds of silence. Diction vs Apple Dictation
6. Superwhisper
Mac-first app with on-device models, custom modes and a lifetime plan. iPhone version needs iOS 26. Diction vs Superwhisper
How to choose
- If your voice must stay on hardware you control, pick an app with on-device or self-hosted speech.
- If you dictate long messages, pick one with AI cleanup, so you are not fixing ums and punctuation.
- If you also type a lot, pick a full keyboard, so you are not switching keyboards all day.
- Check the free tier: word limits and trial clocks change how much you can actually use it.
